In South Africa, gem squash fit onto the grocery list somewhere between potatoes and onions. Meaning, we can get them any time of the year in pretty much any green grocer. In Canada, however, it seems that squash and pumpkins are a seasonal treat to be bought up and enjoyed over the month of October. Sigh. Although, when I was in Vancouver, I did find that Meinhardt Fine Foods, on Granville Street, had a great selection of various squash and pumpkin. Good luck!
